Gravel Pit Carp by Jim Gibbinson

by Rob Stubbs

Jim Gibbinson will be familar to almost all carp anglers with his numerous articles in carp fishing magazines and for the variety of books he has written, including four previous carp books.

Jim tends to write in a different style to most and his views are often at odds with those voiced by many other angling writers. As Jim says in the introduction though, these are his own opinions based on personal
experiences.

It is refreshing to read such writings as they make the reader question the wisdom of their current practices and look at writings by other authors with a more quizzical mind, all of which can only improve their own fishing.

This book looks at, as you may have guessed, the topic of fishing for carp in gravel pits. The topics are generally technical in nature covering Jim's approach to such waters and includes topics on bait, rigs and weather, to mention a few.

The chapters elaborate on the technical aspects and again whilst the approach is definitely not 'the norm', it is without doubt extremely successful as can be seen by the numerous photos of big fish. This latter reference to big fish would probably make Jim cringe as he states that he doesn't like the way that a fishes weight is the primary factor by which people judge the achievement, and to some extent I think he has a point. I guess though that like many readers I'm curious as to how much a particular fish pictured weighs, but we'll just have to guess.

In summary, this book is definitely a most useful addition to the library of
carp books that most of us have acquired. It does offer numerous alternative thoughts and ideas and even anglers who rarely fish gravel pits will find much of relevance to them and this will undoubtedly help put more fish on the bank.

It is also in that elite group of books that you will find hard to put down - a sure sign of a quality piece of writing.

The book can be ordered on line through this site or by ringing 020 7703 6512 for £19.95 plus £3 postage and packing.
