Sea angling guides
by Dave Godwin

I have read a double page feature in the Anglers Mail a few weeks ago and it started me thinking, why is sea angling being left behind yet again, is it a lack of leaders in the sport, I just don’t understand it.
The article in question was about guides and coaches, and it explained about “ RED LETTER DAYS” where your wife or whoever can book up for you to fish with an “Angling celebrity” and what you get for your money.
There was also and more important to me was a small article about angling guides, you know like the ones they have in America (why are we always behind them) anyway there was a brief explanation and a short list of angling guides that you can hire to help you catch your chosen species as they all seem to have a specialist area.
Surprise, surprise there were no sea angling guides, now I know that there is at least one Ed Schiffe, (I hope I spelt that right) this guy operates in Cornwall and will take you rock fishing for Bass etc and has even made videos of his exploits.
So there we have it to the best of my knowledge there is one sea angling guide in the country, yet there are freshwater guides advertising for predatory fish, Zander, Barbel, Chub, match specialists and river specialists.
So where are our Bass specialists, the mullet men, the guys who prefer shark fishing, the top tope anglers the list could go on, I am not suggesting that any of us could go out tomorrow and earn a living as a sea angling guide, but I’m sure there are more than a few sea anglers that could do the odd session at weekends or perhaps on their day off in the week, lets be fair what could be better that going fishing and getting paid for it.
One of the best value guides quoted in the Angling Mail is charging £55 a day per person, taking a maximum of two people, I am certainly not knocking any of these guides, I wish them well. The nearest we get is a charter skipper with a boat full of anglers who with the best will in the world could not offer the same service. I coach a lot of people in angling nearly all as beginners, but when these people go and fish somewhere else how do they know where to fish, how often have you heard someone come to your area to fish for the day pick a nice spot in the sun near the car park catch nothing and go away moaning that your favourite spot is rubbish and vowing never to return.
With the advent of professional angling coaches surely the next logical step is for sea angling guides who can help the holidaymakers, travelling anglers etc, you do not have to charge a fortune but I think that we have to get our foot in the door before any more sea anglers make their way over to coarse angling, and we all know how many have already done that.
So give it a bit thought while you are sitting about over the Christmas holidays, what is your favourite species? Could you show someone else what you have learnt? So why not try it in your spare time? What have you got to lose if you try?
You may be surprised how much you enjoy it.

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas

PS Happy guiding
